Apart from doing interviews and writing articles, I also write fiction. This story is about the adventures of Liz, who shares an apartment with her hotshot detective brother for a while.
The woman who just entered the room was drop dead gorgeous. Tall, long brown hair. Wearing a short, sexy black dress and high heels, it was obvious what was on her mind as she sensually walked into the living room.
My brother, looking quite fancy himself tonight, closed the door behind them. Her whole demeanor quickly changed when she spotted me, a girl in her mid-twenties, lounging on the couch, wearing something far less appealing: a pair of jogging pants and sweatshirt.
I was eating a bag of crisps, bits and pieces of which were all over my clothes and on the floor.
“Nate, who is this girl? What’s she doing in your house?” the woman asked, not sure if she was supposed to be angry or feel sorry for me, because I looked quite pathetic.
“Liz, what did I tell you about eating on the couch?!”
My brother quickly snatched the bag of crisps out of my hands, pulled me off the couch and began picking up the crumbs.
I grinned and put my hand out to introduce myself to the woman.
She pulled up her nose in slight disgust as she noticed the crisp crumbs all over my hand.
“Oh, where are my manners?” I apologized.
I quickly licked the crumbs off my fingers and then extended my hand out to her again, knowing fully well she’d be even more repulsed.
“Very funny,” Nate glared at me. “Mary, this is my younger sister, Liz. She’s staying with me for a few weeks, until she has her own place to live. But she’s just on her way out for the evening.”
“At half past eleven? I was just about to go to be…”
Before I could finish my sentence, my brother grabbed my arm and dragged me towards the front door.
“I’ll see you in a bit. Give or take three hours, got it?”
With that he basically pushed me outside into the hallway of the apartment building and with a bang closed the door again.
“That rude bastard,” I muttered and resolutely walked towards the door on the opposite side of the hallway.
“Joe… let me in, please,” I begged as I knocked on the door.
The door opened and there stood my brother’s work partner, Joseph. I had known Joe for years. Nate and he both worked as detectives at the Santa Barbara Police Department and were pretty much best friends as well. Both in their mid-thirties, one blonde, the other brown haired, both in good shape, they were quite popular with the girls.
“Again?” Joe sighed, looking sleepy. “That’s his fourth time already this week.”
“I know, my brother is a slut,” I agreed. “I hadn’t seen this woman before. Looks like things didn’t work out with Catherine, Sandy and Samantha.”
“Do you want to sleep here?”
“Can I?”
“Of course you can, darling.”
The dark haired detective opened the door wider to let me in.
“Thanks, Joe.”
His place had sort of became like a second home to me over the past couple of weeks. I even kept an extra toothbrush and hairbrush in his bathroom, in case Nate kicked me out to have some privacy with his date.
I was just brushing my teeth when a high pitched scream sounded from the hallway. As I rushed towards the front door, Joe darted past me and opened the door. What we saw outside almost made me drop my toothbrush from my mouth. Two women were fighting each other right in the middle of the two apartments. And my brother had a look of sheer panic on his face as he frantically tried to separate them.
